Resources and Reserves
Mining the seam
BMA's mines are located in Bowen Basin, which covers an area of 75,000km2 containing predominately Permian Age marine and freshwater sediments. Since 1960, known coal resources in the Bowen Basin have risen from 550 million tonnes to more than 28,000 million tonnes currently.
Coals in the central part of the basin and along the north-western margin are ranked predominately low to medium volatile bituminous and include the best quality coking coals. These high quality reserves are contained within two sets of coal measures - the late Permian German Creek/Moranbah Coal Measures and the slightly younger Rangal Coal Measures.
The German Creek/Moranbah Coal measures contain the majority of the high grade coking coal deposits mined in Queensland. The Rangal Coal Measures are the most widely distributed in the basin, vary extensively in rank and quality, and are of major economic significance as a source of both coking and non-coking coal.
Notes:
BMA uses the internationally recognised Joint Ores Reserves Committee (JORC) Code for reporting tonnages available on its leases. All public disclosure of coal resources & reserves information for BMA and BHP Mitsui Coal shall comply with either the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (The JORC Code) as required by ASX Listing Rules, which effectively covers all non-US reporting; or SEC Industry Guide 7 for US reporting.
For this reason any BMA officers making public statements on our coal resource or reserve position are required to ensure that the estimates have been compiled by, or under the direction of, a Competent Person(s) and that these Competent Person(s) sign-off on the information, form and context in which it appears prior to any public release.
