BMA supports new COAL21 fund for clean coal technologies

17th March 2006

BMA has made a substantial commitment to a coal industry fund which will provide up to $300 million over the next five years for greenhouse gas abatement.

The establishment of the COAL21 Fund is being raised by a voluntary levy on Australian coal producers. BMA will be a major supporter of the new initiative, which aims to accelerate the development of new technologies with the ultimate goal of emission-free coal-fired power generation.

Coal producers will work with the electricity generation industry to demonstrate promising technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power stations.

Through the new fund, the Australian coal industry is taking the unique step of contributing to solutions that will not only address the concerns of people in developed countries, but also the two billion people around the world who do not have access to electricity.
