Peak Downs Mine
Peak Downs operations
Peak Downs is a large, open cut mining operation, which was developed in the early 1970's. The first coal was mined in April 1972. Today, Peak Downs has a production capacity of over 9 million tonnes of coking coal per annum.
Peak Downs Mine is located 30km south of the town of Moranbah and 195km south west of the Hay Point port facilities. Coal is mined from the Dysart and Harrow Creek sequence of medium volatile hard coking coal seams which average 4m to 5m in thickness.
Coal is mined by open cut mining methods using six draglines and two truck/shovel stripping fleets for overburden removal. Coal seems are mined using excavators and front-end loaders and 210 tonne capacity coal haulers.
Peak Downs' hard coking coal is sold to South and East Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and India.
