BHP Billiton Global Giving Program Benefits Central Queensland Communities

BHP Billiton runs a global Matched Giving Program that will directly benefit community organisations throughout Central Queensland.

CEO of BMA, John Smith, said the Matched Giving Program is has been operating in Central Queensland since 2002 and was expanded worldwide in 2005.

"As part of the Program BHP Billiton will match the contributions of its employees to local and national community organisations.

"Whether it's volunteer work, fundraising for charity or personal donations, we will be matching the contributions of our employees to the community organisations they support," he said.

"The Program is not restricted to charities. Many not-for-profit community organisations that operate for the benefit of the whole community will also be eligible.

"If a BMA employee helps your organisation in some way, make sure you ask them about the Matched Giving Program to secure some extra support."

The Program is a part of the company's long-term commitment to contribute one per cent of pre-tax profits to sustainable community development programs.

"The Matched Giving Program is one of the programs designed to help deliver on this commitment. The great thing about it is that it allows our employees to influence how BHP Billiton contributes to the communities in which we operate," John said.

"We are very proud of the great contribution our people make to this community and we are particularly pleased that we can support this with matching contributions from the company," he said.

Through the BHP Billiton Matched Giving Program every BMA employee will be entitled to claim up to A$25,000 per annum to match their contributions to not-for-profit organisations that benefit the community.

"Our goal is to ensure that we play our part as valued members of the communities in which we operate," John said.

How does it work?

When BMA employees...

  • volunteer their time
  • take part in fundraising events: and or
  • make a donation (including payroll deductions)

...they can apply for matching funds to be sent to eligible organisations they have been supporting.

Every BMA employee is entitled to claim up to $A50,000 in the period from 1 July 2007 to 30 June 2008. Claims can be made at any time during the period, and are effective retrospectively from the starting date.
