Fatal Risk Control Protocols

BHP Billiton have conducted a review of the fatalities which have occurred on their operations during the last 10 years, and identified a series of potential fatal risks to employees and contractors. As a result, nine working standards known as Fatal Risk Control Protocols have been developed and are designed to eliminate the incidence of fatalities within BHP Billiton operations.

The standards reflect the areas that have contributed to the greatest number of fatalities over the past years.

BMA is committed to Zero Harm and the implementation of the BHP Billiton Fatal Risk Protocols throughout 2004 and 2005.

Focus groups and team champions have been developed, and the company is actively working towards the implementation of these standards that will apply equally to all contractor activities.

The result will include revised equipment standards, operating practices and competency requirements for people.

The protocols cover the following areas:

  • Light Vehicles
  • Surface Mobile Equipment
  • Underground Mobile Equipment
  • Underground Ground Control
  • Hazardous Materials Management
  • Molten Materials Management *
  • Equipment Safeguarding
  • Isolation
  • Working at Heights

* Not relevant to BMA operations

The Fatal Risk Control Protocols apply to all BMA worksites, all BMA personnel and all contractors working on BHP Billiton worksites. The protocols do not presume to identify all risks associated with these areas of work and specific operating risks must be identified and managed through formal risk management processes.
